Description:

The Ibero-American Institute (IAI) is an interdisciplinary center for academic and cultural exchange between Germany and Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. It is home to the largest specialist library in Europe for the Ibero-American region. It is also a place of knowledge production, exchange and cultural translation. Combining an information center, a research center and a cultural center, the IAI is both a platform for cooperation and a catalyst for intercultural and transcultural dialog. The IAI was founded in 1930. It has been part of the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) since 1962.

Cold War Interests:

As part of the research line "production of knowledge and cultural transfer: Latin America in the trans-regional context" we are interested in the effects of different social and political conditions in the constitution and development of scientific disciplines and university curricula in the region. This includes the impact of the Cold War on the development of scientific institutions and the production of theoretical and empirical knowledge in the Latin American Social Sciences.
As part of our research about German-Latin American relations we are interested in the relations between the two German states and Latin America and the effects of the Cold War and the East-West-Conflict on the relationship towards the region.
