Description:

The museum, located at the historic site of the German surrender on May 8th, 1945, originated out of a former Soviet military museum. Since 1994, the museum has been run as a joint trusteeship between the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Russian Federation, in participation with Belarus and Ukraine. The building was also previously the headquarters of the Soviet Military Adminstration in Germany (SMAD), neighbor to the former headquarters of the KGB in Germany (1945-1992). The museum hosts a permanent exhibition on German operations against the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front, 1941-1945, events and exhibitions on German-Soviet relations during the 20th century, and an archival collection centred around images by Soviet photojournalists documenting the Russian withdrawal from Germany, 1990 to 1994.

Cold War Interests:

The Museum also conducts research on the history of the neighborhood of Karlshorst - as the largest foreign base of the KGB, and as the previous location of the Soviet Military Adminstration in Germany - and on the history of Soviet troops (GSSD) in Germany, with a focus on German-German-Soviet relations during the Cold War. It is also expanding its documentation of Soviet garrissons in the GDR, as well as housing documentation on Soviet memorials and gravesites in Germany up to 1994, and a museum collection on Soviet legacies in Germany.
